President Obama struck a very dour tone at a DCCC fundraiser Thursday night the home of Alonzo Mourning, a former player for the Miami Heat, telling everyone in attendance that Democrats traditionally “get clobbered” in midterm elections because the base just doesn’t think non-presidential election years are that important, and so emphasized that 2014 has to be a “top priority” for the Democrats.

The president acknowledged that politics has become “so toxic that people just lose faith,” and on midterm years “we get so discouraged about what’s happening in Washington that we think it’s not worth our while.” But he’s trying to change that and get Democratic voters more mobilized about voting this year.
