Vice President Joe Biden reaffirmed his disgust for the United States Supreme Court decision to overturn a key provision of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, telling a crowd on Martin Luther King Jr. Day that he plans to fight for minority rights because “opponents know the single most dangerous thing to give us is the right to vote.”
Biden addressed attendees at the National Action Network’s annual King Day Breakfast in Washington, D.C., on Monday morning. Throughout his speech before the Rev. Al Sharpton-led organization, which included an attempt at a faux Southern accent, Biden focused on voter identification laws and the recent Supreme Court decision to strike down a portion of the Voting Rights Act. The vice president lobbed multiple insults at those supportive of voter ID laws, saying the push for such legislation was an attempt to keep African-Americans away from the ballot box.
“This has been the ultimate fight because our opponents know, they know the single most dangerous thing to give us is the right to vote,” Biden told attendees.
Since the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in the case Shelby County v. Holder to overturn a provision in the 1965 Voting Rights Act that required states to receive permission from the Department of Justice before changing election laws, many, including North Carolina and Texas, have passed voter ID laws. These actions, Biden said, disproportionately affect minorities.
