When “Gang of Eight” Senator John McCain faced a tough re-election campaign back in 2010, he found an issue that gave him an edge over his Republican primary challenger at a time when anti-incumbent sentiment was running high.

“Drug and human smuggling, home invasions, murder,” observed McCain in a campaign ad. “We’re out-manned,” Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu adds as he walks with McCain along the U.S.-Mexico border, “With all the illegals in America, more than half come through Arizona.”

McCain asks, “Have we got the right plan?”

Without skipping a beat, Sheriff Babeu answers, “The plan’s perfect. You bring troops, state, county and local law enforcement together.” With a look of determination, McCain adds, “And complete that danged fence.” The Sheriff concludes with, “Senator, you’re one of us.”
