In an interview so emotional that it led both host and guest to be moved to tears, Megyn Kelly sat down with Mark Mattioli, whose 8-year-old son James was killed in the attack at Sandy Hook Elementary School last December. Mattioli, unlike most other Newtown victims’ parents, has taken a stand against certain proposed gun control laws that have followed the shootings.

On “60 Minutes” last night, other Newtown parents called on Congress to join with President Obama to reinstate the assault weapons ban. Obama is set to speak tonight in Hartford, Conn., to once again make his case for stricter federal gun laws as the Senate gets ready to begin debate on legislation.

Mattioli said he doesn’t believe we need new laws, but instead enforce the existing laws, such as “increasing mandatory minimum sentences for gun-related crimes.” He also made the point that criminals are not going to abide by new laws, nor are they going to turn in their assault weapons and high-capacity magazine clips.

“There are tens of millions of these out there and criminals aren’t going to hand them back. So why should I be hampered in protecting myself when someone can come to my home and outgun me?” he said. Mattioli described sitting in sessions while Connecticut lawmakers debated gun control issues and watching them engage in “group think” while “suspending reason and critical analysis.”
