$20 Billion project makes nuclear fusion breakthrough

Some interesting stuff here.
Check it out:

An idyllic hilltop setting in the Cadarache forest of Provence in the south of France has become the site of an ambitious attempt to harness the nuclear power of the sun and stars.

It is the place where 34 nations representing more than half the world’s population have joined forces in the biggest scientific collaboration on the planet – only the International Space Station is bigger.

The international nuclear fusion project – known as Iter, meaning “the way” in Latin – is designed to demonstrate a new kind of nuclear reactor capable of producing unlimited supplies of cheap, clean, safe and sustainable electricity from atomic fusion.

If Iter demonstrates that it is possible to build commercially-viable fusion reactors then it could become the experiment that saved the world in a century threatened by climate change and an expected three-fold increase in global energy demand.

Obama only throws money at his cronies running “solar energy” scams.

  • Francis Porretto

There’s no breakthrough mentioned in this article. The whole thing is PR for the Iter project, which hasn’t achieved anything yet.

  • Fred_K

There is no climate change. I do not see a breakthrough. I see smoke and mirrors, and bull excretment.

  • patriotusa2

These elitists really do take the perception of themselves as being God all too seriously. They’ve even usurped the name of Jesus by calling this project “the way.” We all know that the Lord told His disciples that He was “the way, the truth and the life.”

    • Jack Parker

Another ignorant x-tian with his bible thumping head stuck up his self-righteous butt. Leave the science to those who have a clue dummy.

      • patriotusa2

Another arrogant S.O.B. that wants everyone to be as atheistic as he is and also as crude. You’re the only gullible dummy who doesn’t have a clue!

The U.S. on its own came very close to this at Lawrence Livermore Labs. OUR Congress cut funds for the project with no real explanation of “WHY.” It would certainly have reduced our dependence on Oil and all fossil fuels. Who would object to that? And who would have the money to influence (bribe) congress?

Boston, while I was a Structural/Mechanical Designer at McDonnell Douglas Astronautics Company in St. Louis (1978-1992); I was assigned the a very exciting Fusion Energy program in February 1981 known as EBT (Elmo Bumpy Torus) Fusion Reactor (Google for more info).

There were several advanced Physicists on the program. It was a very exciting time and none of us on the program cared that we worked 60+ hours weeks. Then one day in late 1983 … the DOE cancelled the program with only a one day notice; using the excuse that the ‘physics was not proving out’ which was NOT accepted by any of the Physicists on the program.

To this very day … they are adamant that Congress was ‘paid-off’ by the Fossil Fuel lobbyist to terminate this program; as we were very close to the ‘Break Even Point’ at the time of cancellation.

We were partnered with Union Carbide and actually started excavation on 11 acres of land at Oak Ridge National Laboratories in Tennessee for the construction of the EBT containment building.

Shortly after the EBT cancellation; our team was reassigned to the TFTR (Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor) that was under construction at the Plasma Physics Laboratory in Princeton, NJ. I was on that program until I transferred to a different arm of McDonnell Douglas in January 1985.

I can only guess where the USA would be today relative to production of clean, efficient and abundant energy. The fuel for the EBT would have been extracted from Sea Water … no one could ever hold a monopoly on the World’s oceans. Obviously, there is simply way too much $$$ to be made in the Fossil Fuel industries.

Humans are not causing “climate change,” if there is any, and it does not threaten the planet. Oh, that’s right, it was global warming until they figured out it’s not really getting warmer.

Obama NEED BE IMPEACH ! NOW !!

  • Cliffystones

Read the whole article. The only “breakthrough” in it was a newfangled way to pi$$ away money the taxpayers don’t have.

Havent heard squat on the news, even PBS or BBC aside Fox Business alone.

The U. of Tx had the same type of project back in the 70s . They never could perfect it and I think have given up on it years ago. Same here another way to fleece more money from Gov.s via the taxpayers.

Yes and no. They had been trying for fusion along with two others on in New Mexico and one in California to do it with lasers. The reactor in Princeton was on another path to do it and succeeded in 1981 to ignite it in a “perfect” magnetic containment sphere. This is nothing new it has yet to be perfected for common usage but, has been a long time coming and will take care of many energy problems. Linking this with Tesla and saturating a band with energy will enable us to broadcast it and all your car would have to do more or less is have a receiver tuned to that frequency. Tesla was right on his ideas but, did not have enough energy to do it in the 1920′s

      • stadalberts

The unit being tested at Princeton was called a Tokomak converter I seem to recall. I have been out of N.J. for some time now. Do you know if they are still working on that project?

Give the man a cigar. Yes as far as I know. I was there for several rebuilds of the magnetic area which had to be almost perfect. They got a new one several years ago from what I recall. I still remember some of the interesting side projects that benefited from it. It was based on a Russian theory from the 1950′s from what I remember.

  • Rocketman

Call me extremely skeptical that a government agency with billions of euros at their disposal are going to find “cold fusion”. It’s far more likely that some individual puttering around in his garage will come up with the solution. And no I’m not being sarcastic. Back at the beginning of the last century the U.S. government funded Dr. Langley to invent a machine to allow people to fly, yet a pair of brothers from Dayton Ohio with their own money accomplished it.

  • OldDocBen

And we only have to wait another 100 years for them to be able to, maybe, make the process stable enough to be safe. Then, of course with socialist governments in control it will take another 100 years to design a politically correct and environmentally safe energy generating plant that the tax payers will have to subsidize for, say, another 100 years?

  • disqus_bt9O5S2j9R

Climate change agenda is a fraud, designed by the elites to destroy the middle class and freedom ! The same God who made nuclear fusion will destroy them, their power, and priviledge!

This will shed a little light on global warming………….always follow the money. IMHO this billions of dollars project does not bode well since it’s using global warming as it’s reason for inception- junk science in response to junk science? Needing more money to boot.

  • randydutton

Lockheed Martin has one-upped this project with their own, better, cheaper, and truck container sized fusion reactor. Watch the Google Solve for X presentation https://plus.google.com/+SolveforX/posts/HsTGsEz3Zpv or read about it here: http://americansecurityproject.org/blog/2013/lockheed-martin-outlines-plans-for-nuclear-fusion-reactor/

  • becky

Oh for crying out loud people. Get real. That cheap and viable energy has ALREADY been done. Ever hear of Tesla? It will just get bought out and buried or never happen. You don’t REALLY believe the politicians will EVER allow people ease do you? If so I have a rail line to the moon I’d like to sell you.

Governments only destroy , never create !!!

“… it could become the experiment that saved the world …”

Or it could be the experiment that destroyed the world through an uncontrolled reaction.
