Jon Stewart had Al Gore on “The Daily Show” Wednesday night, where he did not wait long to ask the environmental activist about the sale of his Current TV to oil-backed Al Jazeera.

Gore defended the move despite his rhetoric in the past against news programming sponsored by oil, gas and coal companies, and what he views as the global threat of fossil fuels. He told Stewart that Al Jazeera has an excellent reputation for its climate change coverage, and that his independent network could not continue competing without “deep pockets.”

“In any decision, Jon, you have pros and cons,” Gore said.

“You had an opportunity to make a statement probably about your principles and some people would feel, and for me as well, I thought it was an odd move, not because of some of the other things, but because it’s backed by fossil fuel money,” Stewart said.
