The Tea Party Patriots organization blasted Mitt Romney for his election loss, saying the former Massachusetts governor was defeated because he was a “weak moderate.’’
The Patriots — one of the most vocal activist components of the tea party movement — added that Romney had been “handpicked’’ by Washington’s GOP establishment.
“For those of us who believe that America, as founded, is the greatest country in the history of the world — a ‘shining city upon a hill’ — we wanted someone who would fight for us,” Jenny Beth Martin, national coordinator of the Patriots, told supporters in a statement Tuesday night, quoting Ronald Reagan.
“We wanted a fighter like Ronald Reagan who boldly championed America’s founding principles,’’ she said. “What we got was a weak moderate candidate handpicked by the Beltway elites and country-club establishment wing of the Republican Party.
