Tony Blair: U.S. Should Stop Wanting Love
Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair said Tuesday that the United States should “give up on being loved” as long as it remains the “world’s greatest power.”
“If I were you, I would sort of give up on being loved,” Blair said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “If that’s your ambition as still the world’s greatest power, give up on it, because it’s not going to happen.”
Blair was asked about the belief President Barack Obama’s election in 2008 was going to drastically improve the United States’ image abroad. While Obama has improved the United States’ standing, particularly in Europe, a wave of sometimes violent anti-American protests in the Middle East has washed away any belief in a radical overhaul.
Blair said the United States remained respected around the world and in the Middle East, despite the protests.
