The Obama camp is taking the gloves off, unveiling several online attack ads

Now that Mitt Romney has a clear run at the GOP nomination, the Obama camp and its supporters are taking the gloves off, unveiling several online attack ads last week that jumped into the top of the most popular political spots, according to VisibleMeasures’ True Reach data.

At the top of the week’s chart is the new spot “Mitt Romney: Memories to Last a Lifetime.” The ads use past remarks from Mr. Romney not to paint him as a a flip-flopper but as a “severly conservative nominee.”

This highlights the new approach that the Journal’s Carol E. Lee highlighted Monday in Washington Wire: that Obama’s advisers are no longer making the case that the former Massachusetts governor has no “core.” Rather, they say the more conservative iteration of Mr. Romney’s beliefs do indeed reflect his true beliefs –- an effort to keep him from tacking to the center and appealing to independent voters who may sense that he may be more moderate as president than he was in the Republican primaries.
