Feds shut down Amish farm for selling fresh milk

The FDA won its two-year fight to shut down an Amish farmer who was selling fresh raw milk to eager consumers in the Washington, D.C., region after a judge this month banned Daniel Allgyer from selling his milk across state lines and he told his customers he would shut down his farm altogether.

The decision has enraged Mr. Allgyer’s supporters, some of whom have been buying from him for six years and say the government is interfering with their parental rights to feed their children.

But the Food and Drug Administration, which launched a full investigation complete with a 5 a.m. surprise inspection and a straw-purchase sting operation against Mr. Allgyer’s Rainbow Acres Farm, said unpasteurized milk is unsafe and it was exercising its due authority to stop sales of the milk from one state to another.

I lived on my Aunt and Uncle’s farm for five years as a child. They had 4 sons and one daughter and we all drank unpasteurized milk every day for every meal and no one ever got ill from the milk. I’m sure there are cases of illness caused by unpasteurized milk, but you should be allowed to make the decision as to whether or not you want to drink it. Since you always have a choice to choose between pasteurized and unpasteurized why is the FDA sticking their nose into my choice? Just more government control of our lives and choices.

    • Mayflower Decendant

It’s just another way for the Gov to control us.. They don’t want us to have that resource to fall back on when shtf happens. They say it isn’t good for us when in fact it is the best for you when raw. Most of the nutrients get cooked out during the pasturization process.

  • henry knox

The feds are insidious. They use any hint of interstate commerce to perform their evil. Remember they shut down farmers for growing food to feed their own families, saying that they would have purchased interstate food had they not grown their own. Evil, Evil, Evil.

  • James D. Williams Sr.

Just another step toward a socialistic government to control people. If those who choose to purchase a product from another, this should be their right. I see nothing wrong with an enforcement of making sure the establishment follows a good sanitary program, but to say that this milk is not fit for human consumption is just another excuse. I was raised on fresh milk and am now 70 years old. People need to wake up and remove those running this country an get someone who will disband all these organizations that think they are watching out for our health and welfare.

  • jim 62

It reminds me of a scene from the movie “The Killing Fields” where the reporter was being held in a re-education camp and the brain washed kids found him growing a tomato plant under his hut and they tore it out and punished him for growing food. This is what communist do to show that they are in charge.. They MUST be removed from our Government before ALL IS LOST… We put a Health warnings on tobacco why not whole milk and let the consumer decide…

  • Mema

One of my favorite memories. When I grew up we had a friend who owned a dairy farm. I always looked forward to going there because she had setting on the table for my brother and I homemade doughnuts and a tall glass of fresh raw milk. It was so good! I also would sit and watch her at the stove with a huge pot filled with the fresh raw milk and slowly bring to a heat that would kill anything in it. When I was older and had young ones at home we lived next door to a dairy farm. Made sure I bought milk from there also. I still shake the milk jug today out of habit. Not once did we ever get sick off of drinking fresh raw milk! FDA knows this but still has to have control over what we eat. But they sure keep letting bad stuff go through.

I was born in far northeast Pennsylvania. My paternal aunt and her husband had a big old dairy farm. Ma has told me that from the time I was brought home from the hospital as a brand new baby until I was about 6 years old (when we moved to western New York State), my three younger siblings and I drank raw milk. None of us had any ill effects. Ma and Dad drank raw milk, too. It’s all we had. Uncle Paul always gave the cats a “shot” of milk when he was milking the cows, and they all loved it!!! Whenever we were at the farm and it was milking time, I was in the barn with the men “helping” them milk the cows. Mema, I shake the gallon jug of milk, too. Always have!! It’s getting harder to do as I get older, though.

  • c

I would not sell it I would give it away and let them make a donation!!!!!!!!!
We need to take our FREEDOM BACK.

  • Mr. Conservative

Oh, the horror! Unpasteurized milk! It should be crime against humanity!! How dare people think they should have a right to choose for themselves? Don’t they understand that the government is all knowing and all powerful? How dare these Amish people practice their religious views without the consent of the government? Just who do they think they are? Can you imagine the chaos that would ensue if everybody were able to make decisions based on their religious beliefs, moral values, or logic? We can’t have that as long as the liberals have anything to say about it. Yes, this is a direct result of the stupidity that is liberalism! Vote democrat, lose more of your rights and freedoms to the all-knowing liberals!

  • Stacy

Feds, stay out of my business as to where I buy my food. If I want to get my milk straight from the cow or goat or which animal, let me make that choice. If it was as bad as they say it is, then how come generations before us drank their milk straight from the animal ? Answer me that Mr. Know-It-All.

  • geo usn/ret

I was raised on a farm and drank cold raw milk every day. It sure made me unhealthy and now at 65 I have to suffer through govermentitis. A disease that has an affect on the liberal brain that has a permanent effect on the knowledgeable conservative brain.

  • Blackfoot AZ

But the FDA will let you buy orange juice with banned pesticides in it, they say there isn’t enough to harm you so go a head and drink it. Liberals = Little – Imbeciles – Believing – Everyone – Requires – Arrogant – Lying – Socialists.

  • celador2

The US of A is a tyranical state.
We must remove the president who would allow federal agencies asuch as FDA to assault a farmer for seeling milk. And that would be a start only with a long way to go. My state of Wisconsin has a similar ban and treats buyers who join together as owners as suspect.(WI allows owners to drink raw milk).
Who serves who? Does the government have a life of its own or serve us?
Or are we subjects to a tyrant ?

  • SgtLucyRet

Milk now will be the subject of a federal investigation. What’s next, toilet tissue and lipstick? I suppose free trade among the people, and the barter system are dead in America. All things that used to be part of our culture are slowly fading away due to government intrusion.

  • ee

so, we let the gov’t get away with this and what will be their next step??

i suppose all you mothers out there that choose to breastfeed your children will have child protective services paying you a visit at 5am to rip your family apart at gunpoint so they can protect your kids from your evil ways and put your kids into foster homes when they throw you in jail. after all, you’re feeding your babies unpasteurized milk too.

come to think of it …. how did humanity survive all these centuries before pasteurization was used/enforced? well, since raw milk is so “dangerous”, humans probably didn’t consume it until the late 1800′s/1900′s when pasteurization made it “safe”, otherwise humanity would have been wiped out centuries ago.

just remember folks, the bigger a gov’t gets, the less efficient it becomes and the more burdensome and oppressive it gets towards it’s people.

  • Stan

The bottom line is,Big Brother is controlling we the people. They are making us sick by taking away the food we grow, and the raw milk that they didn’t treat with chemicals.Forcing processed foods, and margarine instead of butter.People that ate the unprocessed foods, and meat with fat,and natural milk didn’t get sick like people do now eating all the treated foods.Bottom line, our government is making us sick.

  • Girly Girl

This is another slam against religion and running the farmer out of business. United Nations Agenda 21 is the communist vehicle to make the U.S. a communist country. Check out Agenda 21 for dummies on the web. You’ll see what we’re fighting. ICLEI or Agenda 21 is against the U.S. Constitution making it illegal. It’s time to put the FDA and this president in jail. Impeachment is too good for this so called president.

  • leefromok

I too grew up on a farm and drank raw milk with every meal.
We also ate ice cream every day made with raw eggs as well as raw milk (mostly cream).
    No, I wasn’t fat!
    We were very healthy.
When milk is pasteurized lactase (the enzyme that digests lactose) is destroyed while lactose (milk sugar) is left intact.
This is why so many people are lactose intolerant.

The question most of us ask is why are “They” doing this.
They rarely do anything for only one reason.
First, I don’t think they want us to be healthy.
The FDA (which isn’t part of the government just like the Fed) protects us from healthy food and supplements while pushing toxic drugs that actually kill people.
Next, they don’t want us to be self sufficient, which the Amish are.
They want us dependent on them.
If you don’t believe this, do a search for agenda 21 for dummies on tube.
Finally, the Amish are good people.
    They can’t have that!
    I believe “They” are evil.

Eph:6:12: For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
2Cor:10:4: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

leefromok, I have recently become aware of U.N. Agenda 21, and it scares the H-E-double hockey sticks out of me!!!!! (I knew nothing about Agenda 21 before someone here or on the Cowboy Byte told me about it. Had never heard of it.) I am so scared for generations to come. Terrified is more the right word. I’m off topic and I know it. If we Americans don’t defeat Obama in this election, he will move us closer yet to getting us in line with the goals of Agenda 21. He MUST be defeated!!!! Our very existence as a free people may very well depend on it. God moves in mysterious ways and I’m praying He’ll move the American people to remove Obama from office. God help us all!!!!

      • Jan

Agenda 21 should scare every American. Also look at the UN Convention for the Child — go to parentalrights.org to fight this one. Agenda 21 is swept under the rug too often and only one presidential candidate has spoken against Agenda 21 and that is Gingrich — every one of them should be asked about it. Also the UN Small Arms Treaty that Obama and Clinton want. We also need to get out of the UN and get the UN out of the US. They want to sneak these through like they did Agenda 21 and then it will be too late.

      • Linda, NE Iowa

John Stossel says we’re already going over the cliff and made it sound like it’s too late to do anything. Now, that’s *really* scary.

  • Michel

I grew up drinking raw milk. There were 9 of us and we never got sick from what we ate. In fact, we so rarely got sick that it was shocking when one of us got sick…I missed 3 days of school in the first 6 years. My sister missed 4 days through that time. We are planning on moving soon so our kids can drink raw milk (I don’t look forward to twice a day milking, but I do look forward to high quality milk once more). Our government sticks their nose once again where it does not belong.

    • Ann in Nebraska

I sure hope the government leaves you alone, Michel. You and your spouse have the right to determine what is right for your family. Enjoy life on the farm!!!

  • Zay

Here’s one that’s just as bad: reported today, a preschooler went home with her lunch intact, packed by her mother, and a note saying the lunch didn’t meet federal guidelines. Included was a bill for the school-provided lunch (which she didn’t eat, except 3 chicken nuggets).
After investigation, the matter was resolved–the mother was refunded the $1.25 for the school’s lunch. BUT THE $%^%$&* school still inpects kids’ lunches!!!! Is that an example of socialist rule by the government, or what!!!!!

  • bhs3kgt

Add me to the list of commenters here who safely drank unpasteurized milk on the farm.
The FDA is just trying to do its part to help create a food shortage. The world wide Marxist revolution needs it.

  • Claudia

This is so ridculous!!!! If this doesnt show everyone how the Obama
government wants us to be sick, then they will never get it. For how many
hundreds of years were people drinking raw milk and NOT getting sick
It’s just another way they try to control people, and keep them stupid.
People have trouble with regular not raw milk
And— people aren’t easily controlled when they are healthy in body mind and spirit.

  • Dee

What a shame it’s come to this. Perhaps if families would make a mass exodus out of the cities and starting raising their own food sustainably, we could shut down the government-controlled, subsidized industries and have, once again, a free market. Our food is controlled by government agencies in the hope of controlling the masses when things get ugly… and it’s getting very ugly now. It’s also a way to pretend to care about the citizen-consumer’s well-being while collecting revenue unjustly.

  • Neb

I was raised on milk straight from the cow and chilled! There is nothing unhealthy about fresh milk! This is a part of agenda 21 and the UN’s depopulation of the world! As a matter of fact all the recommendations for a healthy diet from the Obama admin is the opposite, they are deadly! But you go ahead and believe what you want and I will be burring your dead butt!
DO NOT BELIEVE ANYTHING THE GOVERNMENT
TRY’S TO SELL YOU, ITS ALL LIES!

  • Whites Right

I still have family that have never seen a plastic milk jug My uncle is 102 yrs young still farms 50 acres of tabacco-and a few hundred acres of corn and several cows and hogs and more chickens than you can count he does all this with his 99 yrs young wife -no other help- they drink their milk straight from the cow. Neither one of these two have ever been sick a day in their lives. As a matter of fact I believe the only thing that they consume that is store bought is coffee-tea -banana’s and lemons oranges and grapefruit..My aunts older brother owns and runs the mill.. —FDA==gov. Funded Dumb Asses

  • BHUDDA

Wheres the ACLU after all this is the government involving itself in a church and thier religious beliefs . The Ammish don’t believe in modern technolegy so why is the government shoving it down thier throwt .They sell it cross the state lines but Ammish comunitys often cross state lines with no insite they exist .

  • Darwin Hamilton

We lived on farm, had to milk each morning and night, there were 4 boys and none of us got sick from drinking milk, as most of our community milked their own cows, and never heard of anyone from getting sick on milk, the folks who lived in town bought the milk from farmers, never heard of anyone getting sick. This is another government intrusion into our lives, and it needs to stop. I AGREE WITH NEB, ALL LIES, CORRUPT ADMINISTRATION FROM THE PRESIDENT ON DOWN!!!

  • POLITICO DUMMY

We used raw milk until i was about 9 to 14 years old, from two extra clean jerseys, no bacteria in milk tested each month. But my parents were scrubbers of the walls even of barn where they kept the cows. Scrub with freash water beach sand and soap.

Many people who have cows with pus in the milk called gargety leave that pus in the milk, as it would have to be thrown away. Rather than throw that away until the cow is no longer sick, the farmers, may not care, the pasturization would kill the bacteria, that gives humans undulent fever, and it has no cure, the last I heard. Why doesnt the Fed Government agi sell small home pasturizers to people, and give them a choice, plus also healp free enterprise. To pasturize milk, the temp goes only to a certain temp, stay steady a long time, then you stop it all, and cool the milk fast down to colder, and refrigerate immediately. Safe pasturized milk Yogurt has to be brought to a rolling boil, or you don’t get yogurt. Milk is only brought to a certain, warm temp a long time. hour half or two hours.

The Amish farmer is selling his healthy milk for $4 a gallon in a glass returnable bottle. When the farmers sell it and have it processed, they receive about $1 a gallon. Of course, the government is going to stop him from selling good farm milk. God forbid, the farmer makes a profit to support his family and the government loose control of the farmer. Does this remind anyone of those big businesses making a profit.
I know you are surprised to find this problem began in CA and spread to the East Coast.

  • Larry

This is what we can expect from the Dictatorship of the SOB Barrack Obama and Eric Holder and this is jest the beginning of what they are going to do and you Movie Stars have a lot to learn and are going to be very surprised when they take more from you than they do now.

  • Linda, NE Iowa

So ~ Am I understanding this correctly? Mr. Allgyer can sell raw milk within the state and no one has the possibility of getting sick but if he sells his milk across state lines, those people *do* have the possibility of getting sick? Will someone please explain this to me.

  • Neal

I drank fresh Jersey milk from the time I was 8 until I was 18 and went to college. My bones were tested at the University Medical School once and I was told they were the densest they had tested. My brother’s were until they did mine. 1/2 gallon of raw milk a day for 10 years. Rarely sick. My mother is 98 and grew up on a dairy farm. She still lives in her own home by herself.
Get the government and their burdensome regulations out of my life and let’s get back to the basics.
