Ahead of the State of the Union on Tuesday, Rep. Jed Hensarling (R-Texas) said in the Republican weekly address that the president made promises in his first three addresses that ultimately failed to improve the economy.

Obama said the stimulus would improve the economy in 2009, that health care reform would boost it in 2010, and that last year his budget would help “win the future,” Hensarling said.

“The State of the Union is a time for truth-telling, and the sad truth is that the president’s policies are making our economy worse,” said Hensarling, the House Republican Conference chair. “It’s a new year, it’s a time for new, bipartisan solutions to our jobs crisis. We remain hopeful the president will change course and work with Republicans and Democrats in Congress to help get people back to work.”

Republicans have tapped Gov. Mitch Daniels (R-Ind.), who considered running for president last year, to deliver the GOP response to Obama’s address Tuesday, and like last year there will also be a Tea Party response.
