Homeland Security: Terror Turkey Alert!

The Department of Homeland Security is taking any threat seriously during the Thanksgiving holiday, including the ominous threat to our national security posed by turkey fryers.

“How dangerous can turkey fryers be?” asks a warning issued on the official DHS Twitter account. “Make sure the turkey is completely thawed before placing in a fryer, or this may happen.”

The department linked to an ominous video highlighting the dangers of deep frying a turkey.

          I remember many years ago on the farm when my folks would butcher a fat hog, they would save all the fat and render it into lard. It makes the best pie crust a person can get. Also raw fried potatoes. I’m getting hungry just thinking about it….mmmm

        I see that there is an infrared cooker out now that looks similar but is compact and stable. Costs about $95 at Lowe’s. No oil used. No propane. Gotta be safer than boiling oil but most people are smart enough to stay out of trouble. It’s the ignorant young people or the mishandling by the arthritic or decrepit old who run the real risk. I’d say “stay out of the fire if you can’t handle the heat”.

        I know it sounds goofy, but there was a story on the local news last night about a guy who tripped on a cord and tripped knocking over the fryer and spilling all the oil. His leg got soaked, and he’s losing his foot and part of his leg. Sad story..

      They are now stopping vehicles on the highway with check points in TN!!
      What happened to our constitutional right for unreasonable search and seizure?
      They would have to come up with a search warrant to search my car without probable cause. In my area it take about 45 minutes to get a search warrant IF they have probable cause. Most likely if you have randomly been stopped or at a check point they will not have probable cause and a Judge will not issue a warrant. When they say then you’ll have to sit here until we get a search warrant and that will take an hour of more – I tell them that’s OK I’m retired and have nothing else to do. They immediately release me from the check point.
      Stand up for your Constitutional rights or LOSE them.

          They put these up about this time every year. Mostly they are DUI checks. I can remember a few of them while I was living in Tn. I-24 from Chattanooga to Nashville usually had about 3 of them set up at various places from Oct 31st to Jan 2nd. I was only stopped once when I was on the way back to Murfreesboro from Atlanta.

    Some one’s well meaning concern is being expressed through the wrong department. This alert through Homeland Security confuses their mission. Better alignment to see this through Health and Human Services. Then it would be way better than government funded abortion (HHS) and the stripping of conscience rights from doctors and pharmacists who do not want to administer death dealing procedures and drugs (HHS). Looks like we have a very confused government, indeed!

      Judy, it would seem obvious that since Ms. Napolitano no longer is in her office to do her appointed work schedule on illegal aliens, she has to find something to occupy her time, and justify her taking a salary each pay period. I knew that she was another appointment, and that she would pay for that appointment, by sacrificing her dignity and integrity, just as the other Supreme Court justice, Ms. Kagan. Examine the background of the czars. If they commit felonies, don’t blame them, it is just become a habit that they cannot seem to break.     Some things are just common sense, aren’t they? Like not over filling the unit, not trying to move it while scalding hot, placing it on a flat surface, etc. Then again, it seems that what’s typically referred to as ‘common sense’ doesn’t seem to be so common these days. For instance, I read about a young man who burned himself to death by pouring gasoline into the fuel tank of a gas-powered generator while it was still running and smoking hot, believing people who don’t think first genuinely need this type of instruction (which I’m not opposed to if genuinely serving to save life and limb, although involving the DHS seems quite a bit over the top).

    You could not come up with a dumber idea than a turkey frier without a Ph.D. in Stupid Studies. The bird has to be COMPLETELY thawed as ice itself becomes explosive in hot oil. One gram of ice, 20 drops of frozen water become 1.2 liters of steam in an instant and that is enough to shoot oil from the fryer. These things should be outlawed.

    With Judges placed into permanent slots and most of them just as radical and dangerous as the people that put them there.

    Obama has shown us one thing that has given me a great deal to think about while giving more insight as to what we need in a leader.
    It obvious that we need a government made up from candidates not obligated to any outside concerns and their lobbyist and really ready to work for the people and signing an executive order that will put an end to any lifetime job’s in our system..
    Over the weekend I did learn that the one thing both parties worry about today is that third party candidate owing no allegiance to anybody but his/hers citizens and running on a unaffiliated ticket.

    Any one using common sense would know not to put a water covered object into hot oil without first drying off the item. Hot oil and water DO NOT MIX. You have an instant flow of hot oil out over the top of the heating element and you have an instant FIRE. Simple as that. I speak from experience as a Hazmat and First Responder.     God people are stupid! Aside from Janet being a complete & utter idiot, so are the people that are dumb enough to stick a wet turkey into hot oil. The simple solution is to of course make sure it is dried off first, but even if it isn;t all dried off, just put the turkey into the oil when it is about 200 degrees, (below boiling point) not when the oil is already at 325 – 350 degrees! Jesus, it is REALLY that hard to figure out? We fry turkeys every year and have NEVER had an issue because we put he turkey in BEFORE the oil gets hot enough to flash-off the water and cause the out of control scenario. if stuff liek this is too hard for people to figure out, we as a nation are doomed! Well, I guess having Janet voted in to “protect us”, is a bad enough sign that we’re screwed, LOL.

    Bought two turkeys, one gets roasted and you guessed it the other one gets fried. As a retired Fire Chief I know a little bit about the possible dangers, have actually seen most of ‘em throughout my career but I’m no novice this will be my 32nd fried turkey with no mishaps. What I can’t understand is how the DHS and their partners the muslims knew which turkey I planned on frying. The larger of the two, the one I’m roasting has been completely thawed for two days. The smaller one is still frozen and the’re both sittin’ on the same self in the fridge.

    Masterbuildt has come out with an electric counter top Turkey fryer.No more propane or frying outside or burning down your house.Takes all the danger out of frying Turkey.I saw it on QVC for a little over $100.00.Also at Walmart I think and maybe check Sears.On QVC they had 3 different models and prices.Holds up to 14lb turkey and cooks it fast.So if you need a bigger bird you can do 2 in less time than doing one in the oven.If you can still find one locally its not to late for tomarrow.Check on line…….

    Winston, come into the dining room, it’s time to eat,” Julia yelled to her husband. “In a minute, honey, it’s a tie score,” he answered. Actually Winston wasn’t very interested in the traditional holiday football game between Detroit and Washington.

    Ever since the government passed the Civility in Sports Statute of 2017, outlawing tackle football for its “unseemly violence” and the “bad example it sets for the rest of the world,” Winston was far less of a football fan than he used to be. Two-hand touch wasn’t nearly as exciting.

    Yet it wasn’t the game that Winston was uninterested in. It was more the thought of eating another Tofu Turkey. Even though it was the best type of VeggieMeat available after the government revised the American Anti-Obesity Act of 2018, adding fowl to the list of federally-forbidden foods, (which already included potatoes, cranberry sauce and mince-meat pie), it wasn’t anything like real turkey. And ever since the government officially changed the name of “Thanksgiving Day” to “A National Day of Atonement” in 2020 to officially acknowledge the Pilgrims’ historically brutal treatment of Native Americans, the holiday had lost a lot of its luster.

    Eating in the dining room was also a bit daunting. The unearthly gleam of government-mandated fluorescent light bulbs made the Tofu Turkey look even weirder than it actually was, and the room was always cold. Ever since Congress passed the Power Conservation Act of 2016, mandating all thermostats – which were monitored and controlled by the electric company – be kept at 68 degrees, every room on the north side of the house was barely tolerable throughout the entire winter.

    Still, it was good getting together with family. Or at least most of the family. Winston missed his mother, who passed on in October, when she had used up her legal allotment of life-saving medical treatment. He had had many heated conversations with the Regional Health Consortium, spawned when the private insurance market finally went bankrupt, and everyone was forced into the government health care program. And though he demanded she be kept on her treatment, it was a futile effort. “The RHC’s resources are limited,” explained the government bureaucrat Winston spoke with on the phone. “Your mother received all the benefits to which she was entitled. I’m sorry for your loss.”

    Yet the family had a lot for which to be thankful, Winston thought, before remembering it was a Day of Atonement. At least he had his memories. He felt a twinge of sadness when he realized his children would never know what life was like in the Good Old Days; long before government promises to make life “fair for everyone” realized their full potential. Winston, like so many of his fellow Americans, never realized how much things could change when they didn’t happen all at once, but little by little, so people could get used to them.

    He wondered what might have happened if the public had stood up while there was still time, maybe back around 2011, when all the real nonsense began. “Maybe we wouldn’t be where we are today if we’d just said ‘enough is enough’ when we had the chance,” he thought.
    Maybe so, Winston…maybe so.

    Many of you seem to NOT notice a little detail — the fact this video was made by “UL” or “Underwriter’s Laboratories”, which tries to assess if things are made to be fundamentally ‘safe’ so that their sponsors –Insurance Companies — will be willing to cover liability-risks for the companies making these products. This video does a good-job of pointing-out serious risks associated with this approach to cooking, which itself is a recent sort of ‘fad’-approach to speed-up heat-transfer and therefore shorten cooking-time, using equipment that seems more-suited to a backyard-grill-fiend person. DHS did NOT fund it, just happened to promote it. Admittedly, this video would be better-suited to promotion at the OSHA site and through Public Service ad-fillers. Luckily OSHA can’t regulate risky personal home-endeavors, YET, or they would have surely banned these long-ago! I see nothing fundamentally wrong with publicizing this hazard at DHS (to their employees?), although it is REALLY! a stretch to link “Home Cooking Safety” to “Homeland Security!”
