GOP Field in Flux

Making Sense, by Michael Reagan

My Dad would be beaming with pride over the behavior of Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain in Saturday’s debate, where there were polite discussions over the issues that concern us all. Moreover, the candidates offered their genuine solutions to the nation’s problems without the personal attacks that would have violated Dad’s 11th Commandment. The winner in the Gingrich-Cain debate was this nation and its people.

In the campaign itself, Herman Cain’s recently soaring campaign is threatened by charges that he had sexually harassed several women when he was president of the National Restaurant Association. As of now the unproven charges have failed to damage his numbers but that still may happen as a result of the media’s relentless coverage of the charges, which Cain vehemently denies have any merit. Unfortunately for Cain the story has legs, and the media will not let up the pressure.

It’s far too early to write Cain off. The charges have failed to dent his high standing in the polls, where he’s been on top in some. He has genuine appeal, a winning sense of humor, and a relentless determination to win. It’s hard to ignore the suspicion that the media attacks on Cain are meant to drive out of the race a black candidate who is a serious threat to Barack Obama’s chances of hanging on to the White House.

Like most of his rivals, Cain has a plan — he calls it the 9-9-9 Plan — to restore our economy. He’s emerging as a tough and determined fighter — qualities the American people admire.

Most dramatic has been the sudden rise in the fortunes of Newt Gingrich, who is cutting into the support of his rivals in the key Iowa primary. One new poll even shows that Newt, who has been around forever, has all of a sudden soared into double digits nationally. Some voters don’t recall his speakership of the House of Representatives, so he almost seems to be a newcomer as a candidate in national politics.

Few would deny that Gingrich, a renowned historian, author and political star, is one of the nation’s most thoughtful and brilliant statesmen.

The fact that Gingrich has published a new Civil War book, “The Crater,” is a real plus because it gives him added opportunities to appear on television to push the book and, by inference, his candidacy. “The Crater” deals with one of the waning Civil War’s more bizarre episodes and is certain to be widely read.

The media have all but anointed Mitt Romney as the certain GOP nominee. He has been the front-runner for the nomination and continues to have that distinction. Romney, however, has a serious problem. He is unacceptable to some GOP voters, many of who say they would not vote for him in the race against President Obama. A large segment of the GOP electorate considers him and his policies as far too liberal.

He is, however, a skilled and cogent candidate and has proven to be a genuine pro during recent debates. He continues to be the front-runner but he is vulnerable because the grass roots and tea party voters view him with suspicion.

Keep in mind that Election Day 2012 is a long way off, and in American politics only one thing is certain — that nothing is certain.

It is in flux because many of us are not satisfied with any of the candidates, except for
ron paul to some degree – a true conservative has yet to come to the top (again, paul
is the best of the bunch) – read more on this at eauclairejouranl.com, a a truly conservative

Except that Ron Paul is not a Conservative either, he’s a Libertarian – big difference!

      • Andrea B

He has Libertarian beliefs about freedom and liberty being the only objective of the Constitution, which is the truth, but with regard to the economy, foreign and domestic policy, and our domestic monetary policy, he’s the MOST conservative of them all. How can anyone possibly have a problem with that?

        Ron Paul 2012

Because he subscribes to the live and let live philosophy. That won’t work with terrorists. We cannot live autonomously in this world.

      • AnybodyButChicagoDemocrats

Jackie: You are so right!!! Ron Paul has an extremely vocal and irritating cult of supporters. The maximum number of Libertarians is .5% of 1% of the national vote. He knows that …that is why he believes he has to hide behind the Republican label. He is the very essence of the definition of a RINO! I don’t think he really expects to win the Republican nomination…he just wants to spread his Libertarian theology and this is the only way he can get any attention. His views are simply too extreme for the majority of the American people, especially on Iran and Israel.

        • RICH

Show me any difference at all, you don’t know what you are talking about girl. Ron Paul has been saying the exact same thing for more then 20 years. Do some research before you post dumb “big difference” posts. He ran Libertarian because they wouldn’t give him air-time, just like the MSM is doing now. It doesn’t matter, we already know Ron Paul 2012.
Or maybe you’re not dumb but just a troll.
Follow the Constitution, bring the troops home now and get out of these illegal wars. AUDIT THE FED, that will stop these chem-trails and deflating our money, balance the budget. Free Larkin, our upper military is out of control. That’s what Ron Paul is about and he’s the only candidate that will put a stop to ALL of these issues. Do some research Jackie No-last-name. I really don’t like you bad-mouthing one-liners.

      • Kat

Yes ….. a very big difference

Nominate Herman Cain and Barack Obama will certain have his four more years in the White House pushing for more taxes on everyone, proposefully negelating our borders, driving up the cost of enegry through mortoriums on increase developement of our own petroleumn reserves, and deliberate voilations of our constitution at will to do what ever he wants. With Herman Cain his big weakness is the last 9 of his 999 plan which calls for a 9% national sales tax that will increase taxs on the 47 percent of the population which pays no income tax at all and the first 9, which is a 9 percent 9income tax which is in effect a tax break for the rich who are for the most part subject to a higher tax bracket. If this former pizza executive gets the nomination our current Dictator in Chief will blugeon him to death with his 999 plan as tax breaks for the rich, but more importantly punishing low income workers and the unemployied, those our can least afford any kind of a dramatic tax increase which is what it will be. His ineeperience in the political arena will be used against him since he’s held no political office and showed since he could not answer one question including about foreign policy without referrig to 999. Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney are our only good choices for both have a good depth of experience Newt more of an historical one of one who knows what it takes for a country to be successful and as proven it in the ninties as Speaker of the House with his countract with America which resulted in real cuts in government spending, real cuts in the welfare roles, and a balance budject for the first time since the 1920′s. Mitt Romney has both government and business experience which is a combination you don’t find in Herman Cain, a pramatic politicain who will change course when the course is wrong, and although a moderate will repeal Obama Care, will reduce the capital gains tax, will reduce burdensome counter productive business regulations, and like Newt Gingrich has the political experience to get them passed through congress. In a dream I had if we choose Herman Cain as our nominee Michelle Obama gets four more years of living like a queen at the expense of tax payers as her husband plays socialist dictator to remake the country into a kind of socialist hell where only he, the leaders of American unions, his cronnie capitalist buddies and anyone else he calls a friend prosper at the expense of the taxpayer and the unempolyied.

CHOOSE WISELY, CHOOSE EITHER MITT OR NEWT

Ron Paul 2012, he puts the rest of them out to dry.

        • Kat

Ron Paul’s views are not in line with the American people. If they were he wouldn’t still be trying to become president . He would have already gotten there.

      • Bubba

John Groll. First, to answer your statement that Herman Cain would lose to BHO. Mr. Cain would mop the floor with BHO hands down’ because he would surround himself with those who are politicians and experts in each field.
Second, Yes I think Newt would be a fine president and yes he could win.
Third, the 1st 9 is for 9% flat income tax, which everybody pays (Scrapping the current tax code). The 2nd 9 is for 9% corporate tax (lowering the corporate tax thus giving corporations to bring their operations back to the USA from overseas). The 3rd 9 is for 9% national sales tax (meaning everyone who buys taxable goods pays the tax. Gee, even drug dealers, thieves & prostitutes will have to pay at least some taxes to the federal govt. on their ill-gotten income. Imagine that!)
        HERMAN CAIN 2012!

    • True Patriot that believes in the original US Constitution

As for Ron Paul he has been disqualified to run for president for two reasons. He wants to make this country into a whorehouse. That’s against God’s law. He wants to legalize illegal drugs which will bring in diseases and make the people of this country escape reality. This will give Obamo-homo a chance to win. That’s not what we need. Point 2 is that Lyndon Johnson sold Texas to Mexico during his presidency. George Bush, Sr. handed over the state to the Mexican president during his term.

Newt Gingrich even though he was the Speaker of the House years ago under Clinton, he did have law and order in the U.S. House. He’s been out of politics for awhile so he’s not a DC insider. Neither is Herman Cain. This would be a great ticked fot 2012 to beat Obama. They will not sell out this country like the last presidents we had. If either one of these two get the nomination for president they both have both mine and my family’s support and I will work diligently to get them into office, because we need change. Ron Paul is alright….Not Presidential material AT THIS TIME.
His supporters are more obnoxious than the OWS mob.

    • Bob Marshall

You’re right! Following the Constitution is a bad idea. What were the founders thinking? So stupid of them to warn about too big a government. The executive branch having too much power. Protecting the home front. No central bank controlling the issuance of our currency. Too powerful a military industrial complex. The danger that will come from in the within the country nstead from foreign enemies. Thank goodness for America we didn’t listen to any of their ridiculous ideas.

      • AliveStillKickin

We need to remove Obama….and Paul is too radical (for the 2nd time…AT THIS TIME).
He cannot garner the Independent vote and 4 more years of Obama is national suicide.
Paul; may be acceptable to the masses in 2016 0r 2020….but he cannot beat the Emperor NOW.
If you wish to argue this FACT….I will know that my second sentence in the above post was valid.

        • http://www.realcolorwheel.com/ Don Jusko

It’s not the Independents you Dems/Progressives have to be afraid of, it’s the Tea Party that now runs the GOP voting block. And we like what Ron Paul is saying, we know his stance on the issues and it doesn’t matter what the bought and paid for news industry does. They are worthless anyway, lie outright and by omission. Ron Paul’s issues are anything but extreme, Obama’s the radical and he lied to get where he is. Does anyone want to debate that with a few facts? I have the facts, I’ve been collecting them for years and I would love to jam them up yours.

AnybodyBCD, we don’t need your vote and that’s the truth. Sheriff Joe’s got him cold and other Sheriffs are getting on the wagon. Where’s that leave you? Take your pittance and bug-off.

Michael Reagan, you are so right, and as smart as your father, the best president we’ve ever had. I have been in favor of a Gingrich/Cain ticket for several months and the way they get along and like each other this is a big possiblity. I just fear the lamestream media will tear Gingrich apart because of his “baggage.” I sincerely pray we can get rid of the Obama regime and wish we could clone your father. God Bless you and God Bless America!

    • American Patriot

Gingrich/Cain … Cain/Bachmann … Palin (even though she said she was not running)/Bachmann … Anyone but Obama, Paul, Romney or Huntsman.

While most of those running look good, it would be fantastic to go Gingrich/Cain or Cain/Gingrich and then each of the others on the cabinet with Romney as SecState, Paul as HHS, Jan Brewer or Sheriff Joe Arpaio as Homeland Security (including Border Patrol and TSA (so we can get rid of the TSA), Bachmann as SecTreas… etc

  • Charlotte Juett

When will the American people wake up the fact that there is only one candidate in this race that always has the best interests of America in his sights. He truly believes in our Constitution and sees any law that does not adhere to its principles as unjust. The only one that really takes his Oath of Office seriously and will NEVER bow to the gods of political correctness.
Ron Paul is the man I would chose to lead this country away from the precipice of socialism and communism that we are fast approaching. None of the others are for actually cutting the size of the Federal Government and returning our lost liberty to the people.
Long live President Paul! If he has 8 years he can help us make this country prosperous and respected again.

Ron Paul is our military’s top tier candidate since they donated the most to his campaign. I support our troops by supporting their top tier candidate.

    • EagarBeez

He has some good ideas, however, when he stated that he was o.k. with Iran having nukes, that is US suicide

      • JustMe

Well, our military seems to disagree with your statement. I seriously doubt Iran would try to attack US. That would be suicide for Iran for sure.
Why do you think Ron Paul has received the most active military donations? We know that they are aware of Ron Paul’s foreign policy and they agree with it.
Anyway, if one of the other status quo candidates gets nominated to the presidency, then how much longer will we be able to sustain our military presence around the world. We’re spending trillions of dollars to police the world. How much longer will we be able to do that? The continual costs of preemptive wars, nation building, and foreign aid will be our downfall.
        Support our Troops!

        • AnybodyButChicagoDemocrats

Since Ron Paul people are infamous for telling us to do research. Where is a non Ron Paul (nonpartison) source for your claim that RP has received more donations from military people than the other candidates. If this was true which I seriously doubt) it just doesn’t make sense…when Paul adopts the weak national security policies of the far left. Why would military people want to destroy the United States when they have spent so much blood defending it?

          • http://www.realcolorwheel.com/ Don Jusko

Gotcha, you don’t know what you’re talking about, I was getting a little sick of your know-nothing comments anyway on this misnamed forum. Maybe Ron Paul’s latest TV ad is proof enough for you. Ron Paul doesn’t lie like you do.
“In fact, I’ve received more contributions from members of the military than all the other Republican candidates for President – COMBINED!” Ron Paul

What a laughable view of the GOP field by none other than Michael Reagan, a paid apologist for the 1% ers of America. Can made an forgettable run for the presidency in 2000, was destroyed in the GOP primary for the US Senate with 26% of the vote. What was his issue then, abortion, what else? This time around he was caught expressing his real thoughts when he parroted the classic “choice” answer. He was in favor of the family making the”choice.” When his handlers corrected him, he backtracked, told every one to reverse the film and ignore what he had said, and then spouted the line about “personage,” which miserably failed in a vote on the reddest state on the map. His 9-9-9 tax plan is bad public policy, inherently unfair and will cause the following: a sharp raise in taxes on the poor and the middle class, a tax holiday for the rich, and an incredible addition to our deficit. Remember the Federal budget does not include Social Security and Medicare, but it is dominated by the defense budget, debt service and Medicaid. So according to Herman, throwing grandma off the train is a legitimate pursuit.

As to Gingrich. Have people forgotten why he was tossed out of his Speaker’s job? Have they forgotten the84 counts filed against him and the $300 thousand fine? Has Reagan forgotten his affairs, his marriages, his Tiffany’s $256K jewelry bill for his latest fling? Where has this great seer been for the past 15 years? He’s been getting fatter in both his waistline and in his pocketbook as he re-cycles his faux tomes to his sycophantic right-wingnut audience.

A Newton Gingrich-Citizen Cain ticket would be a neutron bomb for the Democrats. They would drool over these two. Just wait until the Hermanator had to open up and talk about his real record as the Godfather of Pizza, or talk about why he left the NRA prematurely or deal with the women he has squired. And, how about the Newt? He’ll have to come clean about all of his sordid deals and values oriented love affairs. As I recall he stated, Gingrich addressed his past infidelities by saying, “There’s no question at times in my life, partially driven by how passionately I felt about this country, that I worked too hard and things happened in my life that were not appropriate.” Not appropriate, what an understatement. This out and out hypocrite has the temerity to characterize his immorality, cheating, and adultery as inappropriate. Get better choices Michael.

    • AliveStillKickin

That’s an awful lot of words to bash Cain and Gingrich….but it’s effectiveness is moot unless you state who you would vote for instead.
I suspect it’s Ron Paul…..His supporters just LOVE to bash the opponents to make their candidate look good.
That’s a trait of GMC and BHO also.
      I question your motives…..

      • William

It can be logically deduced from your postings on this site, that your quarrel is not with Dr. Paul but with his supporters.

If that is the true basis of your non-support, then perhaps your reasoning is faulted.

I for one would be interested in hearing “fact based” explanation of you views of Dr.Paul’s electability disqualifications, other than your above posted “Paul is too radical” thesis.

Also, according to your comment to “rjgarfunkel” without mentioning the candidate you support, any argument against Dr. Paul’s electability will be “moot”.

Revealing the recipient of your support, allows us all the opportunity to make educated comparisons between the two.

        Ron Paul 2012

        • AliveStillKickin

I choose to support Newt/Cain but I am sure your motive for wanting to know this is to bash them…..Paulite.
If you assume that my “quarrel” is with his supporters (YOU), why would you ask me to list Paul’s disqualification points?
I was right in stating that Paulites are obnoxious.
I must admit, though, it is refreshing to read something other than thwe usual stand alone posts of: “Ron Paul….2012″, from a few.

          • William

            My request of your support of candidate had onlt two intended purposes;

            1) As a polite reminder that though you yourself had not openly stated you candidate of choice, you did assail comment poster “rjgarfunkle” for not having posted his.

“We should not demand of others, that which we have yet to offer of ourselves.” It is “ill-mannered”.

            2) To better help indentify your “political mindset” in the event you had chosen to offer explanation of Dr. Paul’s “Electability Disqualification(s) as you see them.

I have no intention of “Bashing” you or your chose of candidate.

I had hoped perhaps to share an exchange of idea’s.

For in “honest evalution” of the opinion of other we might each find “err” in our own or help others find “err” in theirs.

Instead, you chose only to label me and question my motives

Labeling is generally the last resort of those with no viable response.

The questioning of one’s motivation, is little more than a negation of one’s relativity.

Pity, to have wasted an open invitation to endorse one’s support.

Newt is a hundred times smarter than Obama, and needs no teleprompters to boot.
I do wish that Newt makes it to the top, if the GOP and the mass media does not try to crucify him , AGAIN. They want pretty boy Romney, or have you not noticed? Romney will be a very mild mannered , give-away-the -store guy all over again. AND, he is against us owning guns, he is all for abortions, and for allowing more millions of illegal aliens into your country. Look up his past.
And, he will support the EPA , the FDA, the ATF and all the other alphabet soup agencies that are crippling this economy, and taking away all our God granted freedoms.
The media is not kicking Romney…..have you noticed that?

    • JustMe

Yet, on the other side of the spectrum, Ron Paul is a top tier candidate, and barely gets any media attention. I barely hear any of the mainstream media mention that our military donates the most to Ron Paul’s campaign. They are afraid of Ron Paul.

My vote is for our military’s top tier candidate, which is the media’s least favorite candidate, Ron Paul!

    • Sylvia M. Auten

Why don’t you read his books BEFORE saying “you know what he will do”. The media has already kicked him down because of his family’s worship and church attendance. Isn’t that against the very 1st Bill of Rights? Everyone that says they
are such constitutionalists, should put up or shut up and grant Mitt the right to worship where he chooses. The question is: Can any of them Preside, Govern,
and keep a stable family, and not be a womanizer when they are supposed to be doing what is right? We do NOT need that type of man. We have had those. Clinton, J. Edwards, L. Johnson, J. Kennedy, and we do not need arrogance, but sense instead of
      nonsense.

gingrich/cain or cain gingrich would be a killer ticket!!!!
    Both are very smart.

    • Winona

A killer for the Republicans. Anyone who puts Cain on his ticket will throw the election squarely to the Democrats. Cain’s performance in last night’s debate confirms that his lack of experience/knowledge with international affairs would be devastating for the election. This alone would not be a deal breaker, but added onto his sexual misconduct allegations, I believe Cain would weaken the possibility of electability for the likes of Gingrich. Also, I have favored Gingrich for quite sometime, and have thought Perry with Gingrich would be a good combination. But, for some reason, the Wise Old Man (Gingrich) is beginning to sound like a Grumpy Old Man of late.

I’m still for Herman Cain……I really like Allen West and Rubio…….Don’t tell me Rubio can’t run because his parents weren’t USA citizens yet….Obama wasn’t even born in the USA…Rubio was…

Please check out you tube of Obama’s murdered cocaine lovers…Larry Sinclair, Donald Young and a guy name Bland….Larry wrote a book of his wild affair w/ Obama before he was murdered….Donald was the choir director at Rev. Wight’s church…..It’s been over 3 yrs and still no investigation…If the media is going to keep bringing up 14 yr old allegations on Cain then we need to keep bringing up 3 yr homosexual, murder accusations on Obama!
