Free cell phones are now a civil right

Pennsylvanians on public assistance now have a new ‘civil right’ — free cell phones. Meanwhile, the rest of us get to pay higher cell bills as a result.

Recently, a federal government program called the Universal Service Fund came to the Keystone State and some residents are thrilled because it means they can enjoy 250 minutes a month and a handset for free, just because they don’t have the money to pay for it. Through Assurance Wireless and SafeLink from Tracfone Wireless these folks get to reach out and touch someone while the cost of their service is paid for by everyone else. You see, the telecommunications companies are funding the Universal Service Fund to the tune of $4 billion a year because the feds said they have to and in order to recoup their money, the companies turn around and hike their fees to paying customers. But those of use paying for the free service for the poor, should be happy about this infuriating situation, says Gary Carter, manager of national partnerships for Assurance, because “the program is about peace of mind.” Free cell service means “one less bill that someone has to pay, so they can pay their rent or for day care…it is a right to have peace of mind,” Cater explained.

I hope each and everyone of you get to read my article on the cell phones as they are not what they appear to be.I have worked well over 30 years and receive Social Security Disability and Medicare which I paid for.Due to many reasons incl. that I have a spinal disorder. I have very limited mobility and a wheelchair is my computer chair.I do not receive SSI,Foodstamps,Welfare,or any other free program and I did receive a free phone.This so called free phone is making money by all of those who add time on to them.The Goverment does not pay for them or the service.As I wrote in my other piece I wrote on here I sent mine back as it was cheap and did not work correctly.I read ‘Conservative Byte’ regulary,but they are in mega fault here by misconsrewing what these phones are.They need to know their topic before insinuating a mass confusion.The goverment does not pay for these phones.They pay for themselves by customers ordering time from them.AARP has a similiar program for $10 a month.Keep an open mind with some of these topic issues here and other forums.This company could retailiate by misrepresentation if they decided to do so.

I was informed at a very young age, “There is no ‘free’ lunch!” Everything you get, is paid for by somebody. If you didn’t pay for it yourself, then someone or many others have paid for it.

Something to remember, when Obummer promises the government will provide this or that at no or little cost to you.

If you go to methadone clinics in Maine you get mileage checks…and the great thing about it is that they carpool but everybody get a check…nobody is asked for a gas receipt etc….then one of them drives home ( I am talking 100 miles) high…they all have the free cell phones here also…what next…the whole thing makes me and every working class person sick to their stomach…something really must be done

I have a friend on disability who has one phone she pays for under her son’s name & the free one she gets. She also had weather proofing (windows, caulking, repairs, duct cleaning & insulation) for free yet she complains because it was not up to par. In addition , she gets a break on all of her utility bills. However, she has cable, internet & a landline. Go figure.
I get upset with her but she is only taking what the SSI pushes on her. If she rejects any of the freebies they might question her need for “disability benefits”. I would be happier if they found a job that she could do from her computer at home.

My husband has alzhiemers and I was told all that they could set it for me and I said that I couldn’t afford all of that. To which I was told that it would cost nothing and at that point I informed them that nothing was free and that it wasn’t fair to those that were working to make a better life for their own family. If clinics were more available in all communities they wouldn’t have to drive 100 miles. If they are ‘high’ they are
on more than methadone. The beginning dosage of methadone is far lower than the heroine they were taking.
The methadone dose is increased over weeks and only until it meets a level in their system that stops withdrawal
from heroin.

Gabby, you are not telling the “whole story” about Methadone clinics. Methadone is a schedule 2 drug! That means it is one of the most dangerous, powerful and ILLEGAL drugs out there. It is in the same class as Crack, Cocaine, Heroine, etc.. The only difference with Methadone is that it has a longer time in the person’s system. That is why it is “preferred” over Heroine or Cocaine. So instead of a quick high with Cocaine or Heroine, the addict has a LONGER high with methadone, which lets him or her take the drug at less frequent intervals. The bottom line is these DOPE ADDICTS are getting FREE drugs (methadone) paid for by the government, and it’s legal! What a total bunch of crap. The proper way to deal with DOPE ADDICTS is to FORCE them to stop doing drugs, not enable them!

If you know of this abuse, Peyton, it is your duty to repot it, but first let me set you straight; the money you are referring to is for travel in lieu of bus service for Medicaid patients who cannot get to treatment on their own. Also, you are woefully misinformed on METHADONE MAINTENANCE, but most peoople are. Methadone saves lives. My daughter was on methadone, it sucessfully ‘cured’ her opiate addiction. Once a patient is on a stabilized dose they DO NOT get high from the methadone, this is factual. Also, METHADONE is NOT ILLEGAL when prescribed by a doctor; you obviously do not know that it is also commonly used for those suffering with chronic pain that nothing else help. People you would never guess were once addicts function all of their lives while relying on methadone maintenance to help them stay away from the drugs; what the methadone does is prevent cravings that send addicts back to the drugs, and many take it all of their lives while working and raising families and being producvtive members of society. Please, please educate yourselves before you shoot off your mouths…and report the fraud you are aware of instead of just whining about it. Call your state Department of Welfare cause only those who actually do the driving are entitle to mileage reimbursement.

Japan, Germany, France and Britain also send them aid, as well as the Word Bank (funded by the good old USA). Japan and Germany are re-thinking the aid and may be stopping the aid this or next year. While we are giving China aid money, China spends $100B improving it’s military, Billions for their space program, is sending 100B a year to Nigeria, Angola and Sudan to purchase weapons to fight the civilians, has 2.5 T in foreign reserves, is #1 in stealing our secrets and hacking our national security computes and has the 2nd most billionairs after the US. But there is another transaction that also takes place……..we give them Foreign Aid that doesn’t even have to be repaid much less charge them interest.
Before I forget – our attempts to “save” money so we can pay toward our debt always involve Social Security, Military, or some other expense that is helpful to our people. Foreign Aid is never even mentioned as a possible chopping block candidate.

I live on disability that I EARNED through many, many years of honorable and distinguished service to my country. I had to fight for it for 7 long years.

Before that, I PAID MY FAIR SHARE OF TAXES each and every year.

But, when people who have NEVER worked a day in their life LIVE on Social Security and Medicaid that pays MORE than those who have paid into the system will EVER receive, SOMETHING HAS TO CHANGE.

As an American who worked forever it seems before i was able to retire, I am finding it difficult to pay my own bills because between the low SS income I receive (I paid into FICA for 35 years) and the monthly payments to Medicare Part A and B. I have very little left over for phone and food.

I still have to pay taxes on April 15th.

That is because the Insurance Compamies DEMAND that you give them the lowest price you offer. Therfore, if you try to help indigent patients by giving them a price cut, then the insurance companies will demand the same price brake yo gave the patient, which then leads to lower reimbursement to the doctor and less freedom for the Doctor to do charitable work for the indigent. I know, I used to have a Medical Practice. The only way to get around this is by going to an “Indigent Clinic” sanctioned by the state in which case Doctors can provide free medical services without having to lose money. Anyone in need should check with their local Medical Association to find free or reduced cost clinics for the underserved. These Clinics are independent of local and County Hospitals.

I am happy that you were able to do that. I, however, WAS NOT!! I tried for MONTHS to find a job. I worked temporary jobs as often as I could. I did home daycare. I tried to run a business. When NONE of that worked, I went to school and got a degree in Food and Nutrition, graduating WITH Cum Laude HONORS. I went to my internship, failed BECAUSE of my disability, went to temporary work again, was FIRED from that job BECAUSE of my disability, AND was THEN told I could NEVER WORK AGAIN!! I have had over TWENTY LONG-TERM HOSPITALIZATIONS!!

Then, three years ago, I began feeling better and like I could run a home business if I had some more training in NUTRITIOUS MENU DESIGN for restaurants. Once again, the VA looked at my record, and LAUGHED ME OUT OF THE OFFICE!!

But that’s not ALL! If I were a liberal politician, I think I’d make sure that the numbers of these freebee phones were recorded in a database so that my party could leverage them as a campaign tool. Recent article in our local paper depicted a young female who was complaining about how hard it was to raise 2 children on what little welfare gave them per month. On the other side of the coin I worked beside many black females who were working to support their children, one of them had 8 children she was raising alone. One I worked closely with complained one night not because it was so hard, but because she was disheartened that she was paying taxes that helped fund welfare that enabled other mothers to stay home with their children She was renting an apartment in public housing, surrounded by many at home mothers on welfare, who from all appearances had much more material belongings than she could afford for her own children, yet the rent she paid for the same or less space than they had cost about 5 times more than those neighbors paid. She also said that she would love to stay home with her children too, but preferred not to raise them on welfare.

Wow! Free cell phones with 250 minutes a month. What’s next ? A free “electric” car, how about a free house, there are hundreds of thousands empty houses, so I guess my “civil right” is to help foot the bill for the civil right to have a cell phone that some people cannot afford to buy. I had a cell phone service, cost alot of money per month, never even came close to using all the minutes. Got tired of paying for something I didn’t use. Got out of that and went with TRAC PHONE, I use it when I need to, I pay for more minutes when I need them. Maybe I should exercise my civil right and demand a cell phone for me and make other people pay for those minutes. Are there plans to make “dish” T.V. a civil right? If so count me in for that too.

I, too, never use all my cell phone minutes; that may be because I have read scientific articles that cellphones can cause brain tumours. I still haven’t gotten a hands free adaption for my cell phone but I keep meaning to. I worry every time I use my cell phone. And, I warn our children about using the cell phones for too long at a time.

Excellent gift especially for domestic violence survivors trying to support their children. I wouldn’t have a phone at all if it weren’t for the life line program. I have had 21 surgeries including brain and neck. I am a single mom trying to put my only daughter through college(her father is deceased and has been for 22 years). Hey, I’ve got news for you, they like it that way.

I used to volunteer at the senior citizens center in my town until I realized the seniors, were being used as social workers delivering food to the so-called poor in neighhoods you would not send an armed brigade. No less your granny.
All the while a truck would deliver free food stuff and goodies to the center, and within minutes of it’s delivery human vultures, who work the system (black and whites) would decend on the free stuff and clean it out within seconds (and most likely resell it for drugs) All this was done in a matter of seconds. To my disbelief.
That ended my volunteering at the senior center.

I should have to pay full price for food, while they get it for nothing, my dog has more shame then these human animals.

This free phone deal is good for those who’s income is very limited such as the elderly and disabled as the service can be a life saver for them. The trouble is the wide blanket the government throws out that allows abuse, such as with food stamps, housing subsidies, etc. What’s needed is a highly investigative agency that looks at the ‘real’ person or persons who apply for these gifts of the tax payer to ensure they both need and can not afford it. I’m just about 99.9% sure at least a good 60% of those who get their goodies courtesy of the U.S. taxpayer would not qualify. Biggest problem: lazy, inefficient organizations, agencies and departments that don’t do their jobs to ensure proper expenditures of U.S. taxpayer funds.
Wonder if congress would do a better job if during accounting assessments that for every dollar found to be misused a dollar is taken from their pay, retirement, medical and whatever other wealth they’ve skimmed for themselves from the tax payer.

This is absolute insanity. When will these free benefits paid for with our taxes end? We have troops on the other side of the world fighting in a war. Their families are left behind with no way to communicate other than with letters. If anyone should get free phone service it should be them. The lower ranked don’t make a lot of money. A lot of them are on the WICK program to supplement what they can’t afford to pay for. What do they get. They get nothing. Some of those kids have never been away from home alone until they went to boot camp. Some of the guys have new babies they have never seen. Both men and women work their butts off in the heat, living in a tent with no AC and they don’t know when they will see their families again, if ever. When is this government going to start taking care of those people. They are working, paying taxes, away from their families for a year or more and some end up spending more than one tour over their. They are the ones making the sacrifices. They are living in help for up to a year and they can’t talk to their families because they don’t have a phone. I am so sick of my tax money going to support people who sit on their butts all day and do absolutely nothing because they know the government will take care of their lazy butts. But, who gets the benefits? Well, it is not the ones that should be getting them. Sometimes there is no justice in this world. There is definitely no justice in this country anymore. It makes me sick!!!

Here is one that will make you mad as hell , before I brought my home I was renting a three bedroom home with two baths 2000 sg ft home for $1500.00 a month.When I gave notice to move to my landlord he said no problem he was all set up to rent section 8 for the same home I was liveing in, but he would make more money renting section 8 than renting to people like me

When I went to Frontier to pay my phone bill today I was greeted by a notice that I can now have “high speed” internet for only $14.95 per month. I’d call about it – but I know we don’t have the phone cable to handle high speed. Our phone lines are ancient and many times patched.

Last month I got full color glossy advertisements from both Wild Blue and Hughes Net offering service for $29.95 per month.

I checked into it – but I’m not eligible because I already have Wild Blue and pay $77 per month. Why can’t I have this pricing? Because this new price is part of an Obama plan to see that every home has high speed Internet – and it’s only for people who can’t afford to pay full price.

This bogus “high speed” isn’t worth any more than $29 – but who wants to bet that those of us who pay full boat will be seeing a price increase to offset the obama plan?

This program originated in part so that in a disaster there would be a way to communicate with as many people as possible. Low income people do need a way to contact others; many companies will not even consider hiring someone without an in-house callback number, and many jobs require phones now. What I think is weird about this whole thing is that the government will not give you one of these phones if the post office will not deliver mail to your house. That cuts out a HUGE rural population, many of those who need them the most.

This really has nothing to do with a ‘nanny state’. we learned during Katrina that there needs to be many, many communications channels — the best way of saving lives is to have everyone able to communicate, so that if YOUR phone goes dead, someone near you will still be able to call for help. Calling 911 won’t work, the centers get swamped. But calling backup numbers etc will.

I had a tenant that had: Section 8 paid the rent; 1 church paid her electric bill; 1 church paid her phone bill; 1 church paid her water bill; she had 6 foster kids that the state paid her $400 each; and she had 10 kids that she watched during the day. I inherited this crowd when I bought the house. She had a big screen TV (when they were really expensive), a home entertainment system, cable TV, a piece of crap car, and 1 kid of her own. Adding it all up, she made more money than I did. At one point, Section 8 wouldn’t pay the rent bceause the house didn’t pass inspection. The failing point was that the kitchen wasn’t clean. I had to replace the window screens every 6 months when the inspector came by. I was getting $475 per month. I then raised the rent to the prevailing rates and Section 8 wouldn’t let me, unless she moved out. I said fine. After she moved out and I was replaceing everything, a guy from a rental place came to pick up her TV, entertainment center, beds, dressers, and the dining room table. I had no forwarding address for her.

I didn’t know that being poor makes one “degenerate scum”. What lack of understanding you have and so judgemental! I hate to wish anyone to lose their job or have their hours cut back to the point that they cannot make a living, but maybe you need to walk in these people’s shoes, to give you a reality check. Just to help you understand a bit better: The majority of poor people DO work but either are stuck working minimum wage jobs or are under employed and are struggling to make it. This was my situation this past year where I developed a disability and my hours got cut at work. My living expensives: housing, gas, electricity, water, landline phone, plus food cost more than I earned. I never did go on public assistance, but I did have to go to a food bank for my food because otherwise I would not have eaten. I was working!! I was offered one of these phones but my income was right at the threshold of not qualifying for it and I worked different hours each pay period. It could be the next pay period I could earn $5 too much and have to turn the phone in. Not enough to pay my living expenses but too much for the phone. I just received groceries from the food bank, called the utilities and told them I would be late with payments and if need be could part with the electricity and take a cold shower. I am working a bit more and struggling to pay back bills but paying them. But I still don’t have one of these mobile phones. So before you judge others, walk in their shoes first. You don’t know how scary it is to not have enough money and have the utility companies threaten to shut you off, be shut off, then have utilities tack a charge on to turn you back on, or get behind in your housing and have all these entities demand your money and not be able to pay. They will not hesitate to take everything from you to get their money, they don’t care if you wind up on the street.

Somehow I am making it, it is a struggle but I have a landline phone and that is good enough. I would rather not get this cell phone and let it go to someone who really needs it.

This is not a new concept. I have been paying into the “Universal Service Fund” for a number of years. You cannot opt out, as this is a charge the government says the phone companies have to pay to “assist libraries, schools, low income people to have”necessary” phone service”. If the government would tell the phone companies they cannot pass this cost of service on the the consumers, how long do you think this charge would be on your bill? Not very long, I can assure you. The phone companies love it because it generates more income for them, while stealing from the person who works and pays bills. Nothing makes me madder than to see someone in line in a grocery story using EBT (South Carolina Food Stamp Card), pull out their cell phone to chat with their friend, and then go out and get into a car that’s better than what I can afford as a working person. So how do we stop this madness? How do we stop miscreants from getting free food, free health care, free phones, free housing and money on top of that? When we stop letting those that are on welfare vote!!!!! When we force our so called “representatives” into doing for the working person, and quit giving all these extras to those who will not work. Go back to giving rice, beans, essentials only for food. What most people don’t understand is that programs like this are payoffs from the elected officials at your expense. I was raised in a family where each of us had responsibilities and chores each day. These were to be carried out in part to show respect to our parents, and in part, to keep the home running smoothly. I was the oldest of five children and naturally I had a bigger responsibility than the younger ones. But, both of my parents worked every day to provide food, shelter and clothing for us all. Dad believed it was his job to take care of his family. Not once can I remember either of them complaining about how hard it was or that we “deserved” help from others to keep our home together. Mom was a stay-at-home wife and Mother and Dad worked at any job he could find when things were slow at the mines. He began working at 14 yrs. old and continued until his health forced him into early retirement at 62. He did not get the Black Lung Pension (he said as long as he could work he did not want it).
When he was ready to retire it was found that the company officials in Ohio where he had worked for nearly 20 years had not paid into the pension plans and had left the country with the money.
After a class action law suit his retirement was $62.00 a month. That and the Social Security he and Mom could draw barely covered living expenses. But, still they never asked for hand-outs or for anyone to feel sorry for them. They instilled that same work ethic and pride in their children.

I have said all that to say this………the elected officials in this country have become so corrupt and self-serving that the sense of pride and work ethics have become a foreign concept to them. In turn, whatever it takes to pull in votes is what they will give to the public. Whether it is free cell phones, free food, shelter, clothing, medical care or whatever, they will cater to those who wouldn’t work if it WERE AVAILABLE.

I believe that in order to qualify for ANY “freebies,” on the spot, as well as random, drug testing should be mandatory. If you don’t pass, no application will be taken. U.S. citizenship should also be mandatory. No papers, get out of line. I also firmly believe that any family with more than three children should have to prove they are using some form of birth control. If the Mother becomes pregnant with a fourth child they lose whatever government help they may be receiving for the children and one or both parents must find a job to show that they are trying. Then, after meeting the drug testing qualifications and keeping the job for at least six months, they may re-apply for assistance. This applies to single Mothers as well.

Of course there would be exceptions for physically or emotionally handicapped children.

If these guidelines seem harsh or heartless, so be it. It would be a good place to start and would show this country as well as the world that we are serious about getting the United States of America back on it’s way to being self-sufficient and strong as it once was.

The greedy, self-centered politicians and those behind the scene pulling the strings that control the puppets in the front office are always looking for ways to feed into the lazy, shiftless, “you owe me, it’s my right,” mentality. Until we can make changes in the laws and leaders we will continue to have these freeloaders in our country.

I am one of the Senior citizens that worked since graduation in 1967 at whatever and wherever I could find work. Everything from farm work, delivering newspapers, cleaning houses & business offices, motel desk clerk, factory work in Chicago, nurse’s aide in hospitals & nursing homes, home health assistant, and teacher’s aide. Oh, yes. I was also a wife and mother. Now a grandmother and great grandmother. I live on less than $700.00 a month social security disability. At one point I was getting $105.00 in food stamps (from a different fund than the regular food stamps). Then the government said I was getting too many and decreased the amount by $5.00. Also, those of us on Social Security were informed that since there had not been a raise in the cost of living in the past year or so we would not receive any increase in the S.S. check this year. Don’t know WHO was on THAT panel or what country they live in. I don’t ask for anything that I have not earned. I DO NOT have the free cell phone ( or any cell phone for that matter) because I feel it is just another way for the government to keep tabs on us. I did not earn the phone therefore I don’t want it.

Hopefully, this has cleared the air just a little on my previous posts. Frustrated, yes. Angry, yes. Bewildered, yes. Open to suggestions as how to make it all better, yes.

There is another side of this matter to be considered! Believe it or not, there are desperately poor people who have no access to communication with their family or emergency personnel. Normally I’d agree with all of you but many citizens who are served by “legitimate charities” are unable to afford phone service, much less a less expensive cell phone. Consider those who are homeless through no fault of their own – someone who worked hard all their life and now their employer has let them go before they have a chance to collect the retirement benefits that they helped pay for and they’ve lost their home and everything else. I hope someday none of you experiences this scenario.

About 5 days ago I got a call from Rent-a-Center to confirm one of my tenants date of residency and rent amount so that tenant could rent from the RAC. Yeterday I got a call from the tenant telling me she hasn’t worked for a month so the rent will be late. Huh? But, she has money for RAC! As usual, this is some kind of scam. I know someone who received one of these “phones”. It was a piece of crap that looked like it had been run over by a car. It would not turn on or hold a charge for 1 second. (Not exagerating). It did have a valid phone number (so the crap company sending these phones still get paid).
