Gay GOPers turn out for Huntsman

Jon Huntsman’s Washington, D.C. fundraiser last night included what one attendee described as an unusually diverse Republican crowd — including the heads of the two main, and feuding, gay Republican groups.

The executive director of the confrontational conservative group GOProud, Jimmy LaSalvia, was in attendance; as was the deputy executive director of the more establishmentarian Log Cabin Republicans, Christian Berle.

Huntsman has piqued the interest of Republican moderates across the boards, though it’s unclear that they compose much of a primary voting bloc, and while his positions on gay rights are (his supporters hasten to note) more or less the same as George W. Bush’s, he’s simply not competing for social conservative activists who have pushed the other candidates to favor repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.
