Eugene, Oregon Upholds Ban on Reciting Pledge of Allegiance

An Oregon town’s City Council voted down a proposal to say the Pledge of Allegiance before every council meeting, but later passed a compromise that seemed to make no one happy.

The approved measure allows the pledge to be recited at just four Eugene City Council meetings a year, those closest to the Fourth of July, Veterans Day, Memorial Day and Flag Day.

It was supposed to be simple, but Councilman Mike Clark soon found out when you’re dealing with God and country, nothing in Eugene is easy.

Clark says all he wanted to do was unite the council and show his more conservative constituents that in this city where diversity is celebrated, their more traditional values also are important.

    I decided not to say the pledge of alliegence either. In 11th grade i had a leftist teacher and he never would say it. He said he couldnt say it knowing all the evil this country stood for

      I agree, but this country is not the one that I was brought up in. As corporate interests, special interests and divisive partisan politics has fragmented and wrestled freedom from the citizens, this country has been kidnapped from “we the people”. When I pledge allegiance, it is to the country the USA should be, not what it is. It keeps me with my sight on a higher ideal for this country,that at some point we may have to give our lives for, to give our children the true American dream. Hence, I am libertarian in my bent and a lover of the ideals of natural law and limited government. My allegiance is to my fellow citizen in rising to protect our freedoms. If we acquiesce and forget the ideal, we have finally fallen prey to the globalist and become slaves to a corporate consumption society.

There isn’t anything in the Pledge of Alliegence that’s bad or devise unless you happen to not know your own history, or you know it through the eyes of a leftist communist infiltraitor . There could be other reasons but none of them have to do with being a true American. I could find hundreds of reasons not to want to be anything else but an American, and only those who can’t see that are the ones who should fine a place they can call their own. Why are you trying to hide and run away from our past. Is that what you do with your own life. If you are then you need some real professional help. I would find a doctor who loves America.

        I think it is horrible that most of our young people do not know the pledge and that it is not said in schools. When I was in school, we said it every morning.

    There was more diversity in this country before the left started pushing diversity.  People were a lot more tolorant of other religions, ethnic groups, and ideas.  Once the left started telling us we had to do this and couldn’t do that because it might offend another group, the differences in groups started to really pop out.  I can’t pray in school because it might offend someone who doesn’t have the same belief.  I can’t say the Pledge of Allegiance because it might offend someone else.  What happened to the rights of people.  You have the right to pray, or not to pray.  You have the right to say the Pledge of Allegiance, or not say it.  You have the right to Praise the Lord, or not to.  Diversity has taken away the rights I was raised with.  I was always taught you have the right to do all you want to, as long as it doesen’t hurt another person, place or thing.  If we would all live by that, no ones rights would be taken away.Stop taking my rights away in the name of diversity.

I am sure that there are some God believing folks who truly love America living there but they must be few and in the minority to be represented by City Councilmen/women who will not recite the pledge of allegiance. I do see were morality has greatly declined. God will never turn his back on us but he will leave us to our own devices. I have no problem with those of you that make a informed choice not to keep our traditions but give us the same choice to keep them. Stand there and don’t stay the pledge if you feel so inclined but do not take my right or others not to say the pledge. If the country you came from was so good why did you come here. I agree, if you don’t like our country and what it stands for, it’s traditions, principles, values and freedom then leave. I am a mixture, have 3 grandparents that came here from another county and 1 American Indian and I am proud to be an American…no -American but an American. When our traditions, principles, values and freedoms started to be thrown away is when this country started falling apart. Enough of worrying about offending someone … what about offending us.

    I fly the flag every day of the year on the front of my house, and am proud of the country and ideals which it represents. Of course we have problems which need to be addressed. Any discussion of these problems should be encouraged. The First Amendment right of free speech allows the leftists, liberals, and America-haters to spew their ideas out, but they are wrong. I cannot understand why these people never seem to move to a place that they think is so much better.

Let everyone who disagrees with their town council’s actions make a resolution not to do any business, not to visit, not to assist, and certainly not to vote for those anti-Americans.       Student loans… I heard a publish story about colleges raising the cost of entry when they realized that student were paying cash! No student loans equaling no ss retirement bonuses for the professors!

      IRA’s/retirements… If the government sets it up and you can’t touch it until whenever, How sure are you to see that money when you attained that age?
      I can now plainly see it, anything that has an irs tax reporting account like your health savings account is likely to be treated as their money as soon as you make your deposit.
      So I will no longer follow the system of the government.

    Every nation for millenia has had their flags and oaths of loyalty. These are UNIFYING factors. The only people who see them otherwise are the disaffected and the aliens who hate America for their own reasons. None of them good. The good folks of Oregon, and anywhere else this anti-American behavior is tried, need to attend these meetings and activities in large number. They must stand and deliver the Pledge to OUR FLAG and OUR COUNTRY in LOUD/Clear voices. It is their Right of Free Speech under the Constitution these traitors are trying to destroy!

    Another sad moment. Just another group of people who believe in relativism and don’t believe in the freedoms we have here in America. I know these people, as well as everyone, really did not get to choose where they were born, but they now certainly have a choice to choose wher they can live now.
    Strip a country of it’s foundations, and the walls will fall down.
    Why not leave the “pledge of allegience” like it is, and those who don’t belive in God, just not say his name?

Obama is the #1 villain with his anti-American stanch, except when it comes to voting time. Yes, out country is doing a lot of evil against our (and most importantly; God’s) wishes such as forcing abortions and birth-control on the rest of the world at tax-payers expense; attacking other countries or forcing them to follow our “style” of life (or death as with the same-sex crap that Obama is endorsing); refusing to acknowledge God as our Creator; forcing girls and women to take dangerous vaccination shots, etc.. Yes the list goes on and on, but, what the news media won’t tell us; is all the good that the people are doing to help each other.     A house divided cannot stand. And, America is crumbling more every day for that reason. Jesus still saves today, just like He did when our ForeFathers pledged their lives, their honor, and their fortunes to God, His Son Jesus, and this Country. And, to the Flag that represents this Country. And, because of that philosophy of life, not Socialism or anything else, we opened our arms and our doors to any poor soul that needed to be lifted up.
    But, if you don’t feel the same way we do about this Country and its Flag, then you need to leave so we can humble ourselves; and get on our knees before God and His Son and ask forgiveness.

    It’s to bad we don’t teach the Constitution, Bill of Rights and the Pledge of Allegiance in school any more. Here is what it’s all about.
    “I pledge allegiance” (I promise to be true)
    “to the flag” (to the symbol of our country)
    “of the United States of America” (each state that has joined to make our country)
    “and to the Republic” (a republic is a country where the people choose others to make laws for them — the government is “of, by and for” the people)
    “for which it stands,” (the flag means the country)
    “one nation” (a single country)
    “under God,” (the people believe in a supreme being)
    “indivisible,” (the country cannot be split into parts)
    “with Liberty and Justice” (with freedom and fairness)
    “for all.” (for each person in the country…you and me!)
    Your free to go out there and speak out about anything you think needs to be changed.
    This is the ONLY country that you have the right to do that. Enjoy the fact that you can “bad mouth” this country and not get killed for it.

SO FAR THE LIBERALS HAVE TAKEN GOD OUT OF OUR SCHOOLS, OUT OF OUR COURTS, OUT OF OUR COURTHOUSES. MOST PEOPLE IN AMERICA BELIEVE IN GOD, YET THE LIBERALS ARE GETTING THEIR WAY.     I am a Native born Oregonian a retired soldier, I am also predominantly of German descent with on quarter of my blood being from the Tillamook Tribe. I gave my youth and my health to defend this nation.

    I grew up in Eugene, and I can say without a doubt, that it has always contained a nest of radical liberalism. It was at one time a nice place to live, but that was when the liberals pretty much contained themselves to the U of O Campus and on occasion strayed into the down town area. There were also pockets of liberals in the pot farming regions of Marcola and our near Crow, but for the most part the city was filled with moderates who stood by the “live and let live” attitude. Growing up in the 1960′s and 70′s in Eugene, the kids I grew up with were patriotic, but not rabidly so, and we said the Pledge of Allegiance every day in school until we started High School and the decentralization sort of made that practice impractical from a logistics perspective. I graduated from Winston Churchill High School in 1976, and joined the Army a couple of months later.

    I return to Eugene, periodically, and over the years and I’ve seen snapshots of how the city has changed over the years. Most recently I’ve noticed that University has spread out and the dictatorial nature of liberalism has followed, to include militant environmentalism that puts the welfare of nature above the health welfare and well being of the citizens of the region. The entire state is becoming a financial disaster area and a welfare state.

    This article is rife with disinformation. There was never a ban on the pledge of allegiance. This is pure editorial fiction. The city council actually ADDED four recitations of the pledge to their calendar year, up from zero. So Eugene just got more nationalistic, not less. You people should all be cheering.     No one serious about making Eugene a better place is into communism, nor are we fooled by corporate giveaways parading as social programs (like the recent mandatory health care debacle) that you people would probably mislabel “socialist”, though what you actually mean is “fascist”. Our local economy is pretty impoverished and struggling and we’re all into creating as much work and opportunity for our friends/neighbors as possible. That’s what the city council should be focusing on.

    This Mike Clark guy seems to have desired to make a circus of our city council with this proposal. I doubt he’ll be reelected.
